Having a GOld Wing has always been our dream. A lot of the trouble that we've had with this is just because it IS a 1980...but that is what we could afford!
It overheated and would not start if you had to shut off the engine. My husband is a pretty good tinkerer,, and with help from the Internet, trouble shot the whole thing, enough to figure out it was NOT the water pump! It was the fan switch.
He mentioned that he was impressed with how easy it was to work on, which, considering that a lot of dealers have the "10 year" rule and won't work on old bikes, is a good thing! I would suggest that if you get a bike this old, that you be a pretty good DIY-er, or not be afraid to TRY. Also realize that you will spend a lot of time searching the Internet for after market parts!
He was also surprised with how HEAVY it was. Once you get it up, it is well balanced, but it takes a little getting used to. Also you need to get used to turning it around! Do NOT park in a spot where you have to back out...at least at first. Now that we've had it for a month, he is getting much more confident with maneuvering it. With one this old, you do not sit as low to the ground as with the newer ones, so you are using your toes (he is 5'7") But the new ones that sit closer to the ground for the driver have the PASSENGER high in the air over the driver's head, so you don't get the windbreak. (I like the windbreak, myself!)
Otherwise, the bike is everything we had hoped for...smooth, comfortable, and it loves to cruise at 60. It also takes 1/3 of the gas to fill it up, at 1/4 the price! There is LOTS of packing room.We are taking our first trip on it this weekend, a trip that otherwise we would not be able to afford. And, yes, we are the 'typical" GoldWingers....60ish and have had bikes before.
If you like a big comfy bike for travelling a lot, this is for you. We travelled on our Yamaha 750, but it just didn't have the "cush".
