This is a Vintage bike - Honda '82 GL 1100. As of 2007, the manufactured date puts it at 26 years old. This particular one, bought on eBay, had verified LOW miles (19K) so after replacing an aging timing belt, fork oil/seals, tires, brakes, filters, stereo, etc., this bike FLIES!! Sort of looks like (w/o the ferring on it) a mini-4cyl Valkyrie, (took the Vetter kit off, too) but gets much, much better gas mileage and endless torque. This bike was definetely technically advanced for its time!! We ride in groups and this one easily scoots ahead of the pack. Been on several long distance runs with it and other than a footboards falling off : ) nothing wrong at all.
Gets a lot of attention, too. Am a hardcore Classic Cruiser lover but have no complaints with this bike except that it's hard to switch between forward controls and this; the foot position is just hard to get used to for me. I also have a custom built Harley/Indian combo - it's reallyl neat - but the GL1100 will out perform it at every opportunity! Only down side to it is that the much loved "Rumble" you get with a V-twin with a good set of pipes; Can't get that out of a 4-cyl. It accelerates like a CVT - SMOOTH, and has instant response to the throttle. Have to be careful. It also reminds me of the Cadillac V-8 North Star engine - don't know you're going 90 till you look at the speedometer. Really have to watch it because this bike hits those kinds of speeds so smoothly that you don't notice it creeping up on you until you start passing everyone!
I took a big chance on buying this bike, sight-unseen, and completely unfamiliar with Wings, but glad I did. Had to invest some money to bring it up to my road standards, but no regrets. I have just a little over $4K invested in the bike now and it's worth every penny. Very comfortable for passengers, too. After taking the Vetter kit off, temporarily stripped it down to a naked bike and, honestly, it was almost dangerous with that extra 100 pounds off of it. More power than necessary for me.
These bikes have a loyal following. There are groups who restore these and won't ride anything else and I can see the appeal. Bottom line is the bike, once serviced, is extremely reliable, very manageable, outperforms anything else we've ever ridden or ridden with - other than a newer Wing, customizeable, attention getting, and a blast on the straight-of-way, windy roads, or hairpin turns. I would Highly recommend one that was in a good condition to start with. A little bit of added money invested and you've got a sweet ride.
