The 883 is a great bike for beginners who want to ride around town, and Women that might have a hard time pushing around a bigger bike. I currently own an 883 Custom as a project bike. I bought this bike because, right now, I live on an island that is about 60 miles from North to South and 6 East to West. So I guess its a bike for beginners, Women, and people on Okinawa.
Like most Harleys build after about 94, it is a very reliable bike if it is taken care of. Park it for 6 months 50 feet from the ocean and it becomes a big ball of rust. Most of the stock chrome has begun to flake off. The motor is also losing its coating. I think you would get this from most bikes.
If you have never owned a bike, or lack the leg strength that come form hauling a bear gut around, the 2004 883 is a great bike for you. I have seen allot of 04 for under 5 grand. Pick one up, learn to ride, sell it and go bigger. If your a vet to the two wheel world, chose one of the 96 cubic inch models that suits your driving stile. The 883 is about 80-100 pounds lighter than the Dyna and the Softail. Although the bike is lighter, stock, it stands about an inch higher.
RATING
Performance, Your will fight hard to get this thing up to 90 mph. Once there you will not enjoy the vibration. Not a bike for carving corners but you don't buy an 883 to do that. As an 883 cruiser, it performs great if you stay in town and below 70. It is an excellent bike for what it is.
Reliability, Store it in a dry place out of the weather and it will last. leave it out in the rain on the coast and it will rust. If stored correctly and standard maintenance is done (Oil change, tune ups...) an 883 will last right up until that car pulls out in front of you.
Comfort, Like I said, stay below 70 and its a nice ride. If you push it, you will feel it. Not a comfy ride to put hours of highway miles on.
Quality and Craftsmanship, the Chrome plating can be better. Allot of aftermarket parts are superior to what comes stock.
