BMW motorcycle-love them or hate them. All riders have there favorites but when it comes to BMW everyone tends to fall into one of these two categories. I still contend it is comparing apples to oranges in most cases but...
Yes,, they tend to be more expensive: initial cost, maintenance, and accessories. My advise,, keep shopping and there are plenty of online organizations (you will have to find them yourself, not trying to advertise any particular one but I am now with several) that has home maintenance tips, accessories for sale or trade. Beamer riders are a bit of a different breed, I have never met one that didn't mind giving a few minutes or the entire morning chatting with a cup of coffee,,, anyway...
I decided on this model because I live in the mountains, plenty of dirt or unmaintained roads in addition to highways. It is a bit top heavy so not as much fun in mud or deep sand, might be better with true off road tires which are not as much fun on highway. Standard GS is a bit lower than Adventure model (seat is adjustable but I couldn't find one that would fit me with out an additional lowering kit at a much higher cost) and transmission gears are different-adventure is "granny geared" basically set one lower through out all 6 according to my research, this was actually a deciding point for me personally I wanted the higher top gear for running the interstate. Now I find myself looking for the path less traveled so I can spend more time in the twisties. Also the larger tank on the adventure makes it a bit more prone to tip over especially at 1/2 to 3/4 tank.I should probably add that I am 5'8" with the standard seat, no load I have to tip toe out a bit, I am still looking for a lower seat at the right price.
definitely look for luggage that suits you. town case is good for quick on and off but less room for a long trip. engine guards are a must, if you can afford them add the tank guards too. also the stock headlamps are set to low for much night ridding, probably for misty conditions. I am currently adding driving lights. As a side note this bike is a bit more like an English saddle (for you horse backer), I lay my legs over the engine guards or heel hook on the rear pegs to extend ridding time. I can be a bit uncomfortable with feet directly under hips for extended riding but it is very stable for twisties.
I wanted a bike that I could take up a trail, higher ground clearance (if you have ever bottomed out a bike you know it is not fun)and still take a cross country trip. It will run 85 with a full load all day- I loaded everything I could think I might possibly ever need for an extended road trip and took a solo run for about 500 miles and still surprisingly fun in the twisties; might I add much better than my old HD. I am currently planning a 1300 mile camping road trip. I have ridden just about every flavor of US or Euro bike on the market this was the bike for me.
all best, remember it is not about the destination.
