After doing a rather extensive amount of research, and I do mean extensive, I decided to go with a used Nissan Titan Crew Cab LE 2 wheel drive. You can easily find the numbers and reviews out there so I will just focus on why I personally chose to buy a Nissan Titan
For starters I do not like to buy new and especially a $40K truck that will immediately loose several thousand off the lot doesn't make sense to me. I also didn't want to spend more then I had to get a truck with everything that I wanted but still wanted the new style/power/chassis/towing/comfort... features so that means about 2003-2006 year trucks were in my category and made the most sense to me.
To be honest I don't particularly like Dodge and I really love the new Chevy but for the years I could afford they just don't seem to be as good in the consumer ratings. So basically that left Ford F150 and Toyota to compare against the Titan.
I love the reliability of Toyota and I have always liked the Tundra. It's a great truck and the 05-06 seemed to have the best "smooth" power delivery of them all and felt the smallest/nimble while driving but really seemed to be a little too small in size and towing power, and the price was always just a bit too high for me considering the competition. The brand new Tundra is probably the best truck out there IMO but I just couldn't rationalize paying another $15K for it... Great truck but a little too pricey.
My family has always driven Ford trucks and vans so I definitely took a hard took at the F-150's and boy are they everywhere so you can really be picky and get exactly what you want. Aftermarket is very easy to get parts and custom's so if your gonna make it a lifted custom with 35's and all the bells and whistles I would probably go with a Ford. Personally I really liked the ford but the power felt very sluggish and I actually thought it was a V6... So for me that was a big deal and considering the comparable trucks I wanted was Ford was around 22K, so not for me.
For starters Nissan's big new truck came out in 04 and I was immediately was impressed with the look so thats +1. After test driving every truck out there the Nissan had a great balance between a smooth ride and a classic truck feel. The cab seemed very roomie and the truck felt good strong size but not too big like every other truck out there (except the toyota), but drove smaller then you would expect. Some guys might like a big drive but I really prefer the Nissans easy to drive truck that seems very manageable. The power shot you right out of the gate with the most impressive throttle response of them all giving you the impression that you should take this baby to the track! It instills a lot of confidence as it shifts fast and smoothly through the gears just what I like! Now the payload and towing capacity are at the top of it's class +3, and boy are there a bunch of extra features that really made a big difference to me! Like the factory spray-in bed liner, track tie down system, side fender storage, tow mode, dual climate control, heated seats/mirrors, auto dimming mirrors, fold up and down rear seats, navigation/DVD, power everything, tire pressure monitor, power moon roof... I could go on and on but the bottom line is Nissan has great attention to detail and it really shows!
So I was patient and found my 2006 Nissan Titan Crew Cab LE 4X2, Utility Bed Package, Tow Package, Navigation/DVD, extended 100,000 warranty, Shell all this for $15,500! WOW!
