Over the years, I have owned many 1992-1997 F-250/F-350's and I have found these trucks to be very reliable, but they do have some odd qurks. This info is the exact same for the 1992-1997 F-350's.
Be aware that there were two different F-250 body styles in 1997, the square looking one (1992-early 1997), and the one that looks like the F-150's (late 1997-2003). This different truck had 7 wheel lugs, and was called the 7700 payload group. None of this review concerns the newer F-150 looking truck.
The Bad:
1. Inside door handles and cable. The cable always streaches, then your door gets harder to open, if you pull too hard on the handle, it will break. Very frustrating! (most all 1992-1997 F-250/F-350's)
2. Passanger side dash support. 3 out of 5 trucks that I have owned have a broken lower dash support, if left unattended, it can shake and loosen the rest of the dash, its a very common problem. I make a little metal replacement brace to fix this.
3. Inside door trim. It will require tighting quite often, they get loose and rattle alot. The little plastic push in clips break easily. (annoying)
4. Transmissions. My advise is to avoid the automatic transmission. (Called the E40D, all 1992-1997 F-250/F-350's) It's not very reliable. It requires constant maintence, and can overheat easily. Ask any transmission shop what they think about this transmission, they will tell you that it is weak and very costly to repair. The 5-speed manual transmission is the better choice. these transmissions are noisy, and the syncros can wear out fast, but I have never had a single transmission problem with any of the F-350's that were a manual transmission.
5. The spacing between the gears on the manual transmission is a little too far apart when towing really heavy loads.
6. The sheet metal for the entire body is thin and can dent very easily.
7. Rust can be avoided by removing the chrome wheel trim. This trim can hold water around the wheel well and cause rust. I have removed my trim, and have never had rust issues. It takes a trained eye, but look at the trucks with this wheel well trim, most have rust!
The Good:
1. These trucks are built like a tank! With proper care and maintence, these trucks can easily go up to and beyond 300,000 miles. I have a F-350 that is all orignal, and has 288,000 miles!
2. Resale value. These trucks hold their value if kept in great condition.
3. Reliable, Reliable, Reliable! The 1992-1997 Ford F-250/F-350 have less problems than newer trucks. This is a proven fact, look up TSB's and Recall Notices.
4. Engines. The 4.9L inline 6 cylinder (300ci), 5.0L V8 (302ci), 5.8L V8 (351ci), 7.5L V8 (460ci), and the 7.3L V8 Diesel (444ci). Are ALL good choices. The 351 V8 is a little underpowered compaired th the 302 V8, the 460 V8 will pass anything but a gas station, and the 444 diesel has glow plug issues but gets 18-22 miles per gallon!
Overall these trucks are great. They have been a pleasure to own. They look Big and Bad. They may be a little plain looking, but make up for it with great reliability.
