These are the cars that BMW built their reputation on. Most (during a recent poll) decided the 1989 model was the year to own due to the more modern plastic bumpers coupled with it being the last year of the non-airbag models. Craftmanship is high on these cars and they only got better as the E30 body style continued on through 1991. Most people prefer the 325i engine as opposed to the 325e or 318i due to the greater performance, although with today's gas prices the e (eta as it is called)and 318 engined cars make for great gas misers! These "i" engined cars can be absolutely like a train on rails with the correct suspension modifications, and a ECU chip can add up to 20 or so ponies to the 168HP engine. Performance minded individuals will prefer the 260 Getgag 5-speed transmission over and automatic. If you are considering one, maintenance history is a must, especially that of timing belt changes. These cars are maintenance intensive, so find a good independent BMW trained mechanic and keep up with your car's needs. Ownership is a rewarding experience given you chose the right car, so stay away from rustbuckets and cars in need of so-called "TLC" as claimed by the selling owners. Paying the price to get the "best of the best" is well worth the cost. TRUST me on this one. I own the top of the line 325is version. Very sporty with spoilers front and rear, BBS basketweave wheels, higher rated suspension, BMW sport seats (often falsely claimed "Recaro"), MTech steering wheel, and limited slip differential. Mated with the 5-speed, this car is very satifying and performance oriented. The E30 price range has to be one of the widest of any cars available today. You can literally pay $500 to over $20K for the best M3 version. I wouldn't recommend any priced under $2500 as they are usually really beat up, rusty, in need of work, or all of the above. Don't be afraid of so-called "high mileage", as propperly maintained engines are quite capable of 300K miles (my 1984 3325e had 286K miles and is still going strong).
