2003 Volkswagen Jetta: Hello Tdi lovers, I have sold several of these. 2003

12/29/07
• Overall Satisfaction:
Hello friends, I would like to give some info on buying a tdi, I know nothing about gasums. I own a dealership that sells nothing but diesels car's and trucks. 1st thing these cars are great fuel economy wonderful simple little car. Performance is a surprise since it is only a 90 horse power car but high in torque. Very reliable cars if they have been taken care of. Be prepared to spend at least 500 to 800.00 dollars on one if you are a perfectionist after the buy. The Tdi's made in 1999 TO 2002 Had a timing belt that only lasted 60,000 TO 80,000 miles , but after service you can upgrade to the 100,000 mile timing belt. ON THE 2003 NO UPGRADE THIS WAS THE FIRST YEAR OF THE 100K TIMING BELT AND NICER INTERIOR AND NICE RIMS AND FIRST YEAR OF THE MONSOON SOUND! 2004 HAD A 110 HP MOTOR AND LESS MILES PER GALLON THIS IS THE ONE YOU WANT THE 2003 If you go cheap and don't have a dealer do the service make sure you have done all rollers, clean intake from carbon, water pump since they are right there and really important do cam seal and Craftshaft seal. Some don't do this its a no no!! Make sure you find a mechanic that knows a Tdi. Trust me if you are new to diesel's a gasum lover will jack one up in a heart beat. Comfort is good with these cars as long as its one or 2 people in the car. Any more is stuffed. If you are looking for a car to do car seats for babies watch out it will be cramped and when the graduate to a larger car seat they will be kicking you in the back... time for spanking...well time out .. haha. So comfort is great for 2 any more is cramped. These cars will last a long time since they are diesel but it is key to have timing belt service and all services up. You should only use Mobil one full synthetic 5w 40 don't us any other weight or Rotella regular will clog motor and build carbon up on intake. The 5 speeds seem to get better fuel economy. When you buy a diesel you should be buying one for at least 7 years then after that it pays you to drive it. the Tdi's aren't like diesel truck its like a diesel Rolex you must up keep them to last. German craftsmanship made in Mexico. I have seen one car (tdi )with 649,000 miles on it without a rebuild on the motor. If you can settle for a small interior and up keep then this is your car. Good luck to you diesels lovers.

2003 Volkswagen Jetta: I Love My TDI

05/15/07
• Overall Satisfaction:
I bought my Jetta TDI wagon new in 2003 and am still in love. I bought it for the mileage rating and she delivers. This car gets 50 mpg. Repairs can be costly, though I haven't had to have that many even with 77,000 miles. This car uses synthetic oil, so oil changes are more expensive, but only has to be changed every 10,000 miles. This car was advertised as a sport wagon and it really hugs the road and is most fun to drive. It also had the most cargo room in its class. The rear seats are short on legroom, though, and its kind of cramped on long trips with the whole family. But its great for everyday driving. Its very well made, manufactured in Germany, unlike the other Jettas which are built in Mexico.
I've heard the engines can last up to 500,000 miles, and I intend to find out.

I've wanted this car for several years. I bought it with the intention of converting it to run on grease. I will do that in the spring, but until then I will enjoy averaging nearly 40mpg on each tank. The craftsmanship is wonderful.

2003 Volkswagen Jetta: 03 Jetta TDI

10/29/08
• Overall Satisfaction:
Likes? The TDI with a manual transmission will return over 50 mpg under optimal conditions. Even with poor fuel in adverse conditions we never see under 43 mpg. Reliability has been excellent. (We own four TDI's at the moment.) Comfort level is good for a small vehicle. And don't worry about power. The diesel has plenty. Trim levels vary, but we don't purchase a TDI for its trim.

Dislikes? Unless you have the ability, I can assure you that any work you have done on the car will be expensive. Read the owners manual and VW invariably advises that the car be returned to the dealer for almost any service or repair required.

This being said, these cars aren't all that complicated. We do our own service. Parts are readily available on the Internet and we've found that some of the "facts" generally accepted by VW aficionados aren't always true. Get to know a bit about diesels and you can read between the lines.

Good little vehicles in our experience. I expect these four won't be our last.

2003 Volkswagen Jetta: I AM HARD TO PLEASE. American cars just won't cut it...

09/08/08
• Overall Satisfaction:
I drive 100+ miles a day. Other cars I have owned (Ford, Chevy, Olds...)cannot hold a candle to my VW. No comparison in power, economy, or just good looks. My Jetta averages 33mpg (1.8 Turbo, 5 speed manual)-Sometimes a little better, sometimes a little worse and the turbo makes all of the difference in the world. I took the chance and installed a trailer hitch and have had excellent results pulling a small trailer! Lots of small creature comforts, very adjustable seating for my 6' height or for my wife of less than 5'. Roomy back seat area, trunk space. NOTE: there is a strange squeeking from the front end/steering that grease would take care of, but no grease zerks! No problems to report (knock on wood). A safety recall, however, VW quickly repaired-no questions. I purchased car used and will buy another used VW. SUGGESTION-ask seller many questions & use common sense- if things don't seem to add up...they usually won't. Hope this helps...enjoy!

2003 Volkswagen Jetta: JETTA

06/08/08
• Overall Satisfaction:
We bought our Jetta because of the rising fuel prices. We get 52-53 miles per gallon, it rides nice and we love it. It has been very dependable so far, it starts easy, shifts smoothly and handles great. We are even thinking of purchasing another one for our business.

2003 Volkswagen Jetta: 03 Jetta

06/07/08
• Overall Satisfaction:
I purchase this '03 Volkswagen Jetta about a month ago and was immediately pleased with the vehicle. It has a very smooth ride and accelerates easily. It looks virtually flawless and is exactly as explained. The only thing that I wasn't too pleased with was the fact that the previous owner was a smoker. I could fainly smell cigarettes and or animal in the car. It wasn't overpowering, but I have a very strong sense of smell. Other than that, it is a great car and Lone Star Cars was a great establishment to work with.

Great car. Sturdy, drives, handles well. Fantastic gas mileage, about 40 mpg. Who needs a hybrid? Why aren't there more diesel options available?
