What it's Worth - Price Range Information
Just Sold on eBay Motors
The Just Sold on eBay Motors price range represents the lowest and highest completed sale price for this vehicle on eBay Motors within the last 90 days.
Kelley Blue Book Suggested Retail Value Range
The Kelley Blue Book Suggested Retail Value is representative of dealers' asking prices and is the starting point for negotiation between a consumer and a dealer. This Suggested Retail Value assumes that the vehicle has been fully reconditioned and has a clean title history. This value also takes into account the dealers' profit, costs for advertising, sales commissions and other costs of doing business. The range represents asking prices that typically occur for the vehicle model throughout the United States, not all vehicles sell for the exact same price, which is why the company also offers a value range. By showing both the low and high ends of the range the company can better reflect whether a given vehicle's asking price varies widely or hardly at all. The final sale price will likely be less depending on the vehicle's actual condition, popularity, type of warranty offered and local market conditions. This range includes pricing for used vehicles, not new or late model vehicles.

1998 Volkswagen Jetta: Great mileage, fun to drive

Time will tell on the reliability end, as I've only had this car a few days. Performance wise, I was impressed. The handling is very tight and sporty feeling, and acceleration far surpassed my expectations. It will blow away any 4 cylinder gas sedan, I would say it would be similar to the v-6 Honda Accords. The mileage is a icing on the cake though, so far we've been averaging 44.5 mpg. This is mostly highway, with a little bit of running around in there. For the cons, so far the only issue I've had is the ignition switch was bad. At first it would start if you wiggled the key right, then quit starting altogether. a $35 switch solved the problem though. One wheel bearing is also noisy, and will need to be replaced, but that's par for the course on a higher mileage vehicle, and doesn't reflect on this particular make or model.

I thought that it was a nice dealer, ended up buying the car from a redneck (100% redneck). He is a heavy smoker and the shop/store was VERY dirty. The car drives very nice (as he said) but the rust part of the car is NOT in the condition that the seller told me. He said that it looks brown on the underbody, I say it is a RUST BUCKET!!! I will NEVER buy a car from up north EVERY again! From Pennsylvania is about as high north I will go to buy a car.

The only reason I bought this car is the 48 to 50 MPG and to give an opportunity to VW. The car run good and it does 50 MPG when it works. It is a different car has only one look door to open from the outside and the rest of the doors have to be opened from the inside so, no gentleman opening the passenger door to his date. Or there are no gentlemen in Germany. I drove in that car 200 to 300 miles per day and the car gave me 50 mpg. I drove the car during a storm and since them the car has not been able to star.

seller did not have done things he said he had done:
1- A/C COMPRESSOR WAS BAD, I HAD TO GET ANOTHER ONE
2- ALTERNATOR WAS BAD, HE DID NOT MENTION, BATTERY WAS GETTING BELOW 12 VOLTS.
3-IT IS LEAKING OIL FROM THE TOP,HE HAS SAID HE HAD A VALVE JOB AND TIMING BELT CHANGED.
I like the car because it is a TDI (Turbo Diesel).
Thank you for your follow up.

Likes:

-Speed. The V6 engine takes off. Great Acceleration
-Handling. Hits corners like a go cart
-Very roomy for a sedan. Huge trunk for storage and transporting

Dislikes:

-Interior design. Particularly, the center console and the glove compartment are tiny. Also, the cup holders are placed in an are where only small cups could go.

I have purchased the 98 Jetta TDI for gas milage reasons.
The gas milage on the highway is around 54 mpg which is better than any Hybrid vehicle at a lower cost technology. The vehicle is easy to maintain at a reasonable cost. The car does not have the American comfort with large size cup holders and soft, plush seats. It is a ridgid vehicle for performance driving. Since I prefere manual transmision driving the pickup from a stop is not as good as from most gasolin cars. don;t forget, the 98 TDI has only 90HP.
Any purchased 1998 Jetta will require some initial repair cost to make sure it is 100% road worthy, so do not be suprised.
The quality is very good. Typicaly, if the car has been cared for, this vehicle can last many more years because the chasies hold up very good.
A diesel engine can get up to 350000 to 400000 miles provided it gets is regular maintenance.
I will buy the car any time again.

1998 Volkswagen Jetta: Excellent Showing for a 10-Year Old Vehicle

For a car with over 100,000 miles this one was is excellent condition. I'm enjoying the 5-Speed Manual Transmission for the energy that's pulled from the 4-Cylinder engine, and the economy with which that all happens.

The interior and exterior condition of this 1998 Jetta are remarkably good for a car of that vintage as well. It's obviously a used car, but it's been kept in pretty good shape and mechanically sound as much as it is visually.

There were some minor items that are more of a nuisance than a problem. The coolant level sensor is providing indication when indeed there is no problem, and the oil dip-stick holder is broken ... again a minor item in an otherwise great ride.

One item that is inconvenient is the lack of suitable places to put a travel mug or bottled beverage, and also stow your cell phone or other items that might become important like change or tokens for tolls.

Overall ... How FUN!!!
