Buying a vehicle on ebay takes somewhat a leap of faith, but I did it. There were many pix on the seller's site - he had a "pretty good" rating (somewhat a concern.) Did a Carfax check. Vehicle only 15 months old (a repo) and low mileage - but high for 15 mos (33,000 miles.) I drove a 4 Runner for 18 years and have had a string of Toyo's, so decided to depend on Toyota. Figured the owner couln't screw it up too badly in just over a year.
The one time owner was a smoker who mistreated the interior with lots of cigarette burns. There were also signs of some collision repair - unreported. The tires and wheels were a little hinky.
After going ahead with the purchase, I threw in new filters, bought two new tires, and had the brakes and underside checked and wheels aligned. Then I drove it 4100 miles home from Florida to Seattle. Ran great - good gas mileage, even sitting at 80 mph on cruise control. Gave both the A/C and the heater a big time workout on the way. (Plus 96 degrees down to 11.)
Buying new mats, headlite assy, tires etc plus had local dealer do a 30,000 mile full up check. Figure to add $1200-1500 to cost, but will wind up with a truck at about half the price of locally. I added a bunch of air fresheners the first day, and actually got rid of the smoker smell in 24 hours.
The truck is fun to drive (4 cyl - 2 WD), comfortable, and is just what I wanted. It's a little short on power climbing hills in the West, but I knew that in advance. In regular sea level driving, it passes easily. My only beef is the transmission (Auto) seems to have poorly set shift points. It also basically cannot be used driving in country with significant hills, as it wants to downshift rather abruptly to 3rd and then 2nd gears, sending the rpm's up to 5K - not good in my book. It also lacks Interval Wipers, which my 1971 Corolla had - I didn't think they made cars without them. Strange, considering it has Power Windows, Locks, and Mirrors.
With 4100 miles driving in every possible condition under my belt in the first two weeks, I can say I really got a heavy dose of experience driving this vehicle, and came to not only "like" it, but "love" it.
