After tent camping for the first time with some friends who had a popup, we were hooked - both on camping and that we would eventually get a pop-up. Not knowing much about towing, trucks, camping, etc, we went hunting for a vehicle that was: 1. powerful enough to pull the largest Fleetwood popup (~5000 lbs) - we weren't sure which to get, but everyone we talked to recommended Fleetwood (formerly Coleman), 2. had the best gas mileage towing & not towing (2 wheel drive is better on gas), 3. comfortable for a family of 4, 5. safe/reliable record with low maintenance, 6. smoothest ride for a truck, 7. that would last for 250K miles or more, and 8. priced no more than $15k at the time (3 years ago).
Turned out a 2001 Toyota 4Runner was it. We have tent camped quite a bit since then, towing a 4x8 covered trailer (maybe 2000lbs total), but never bought the popup (were blessed with a third child instead). We kept it as long as we could, but finally had to get the kids more room with a minivan. I would highly recommend them to anyone who needs Class III towing without a V8 guzzler, but only for 4 people. It's a great ride.
