Porsche created a car, the 944 Turbo (factory designation 951), that -- two decades later -- still transcends time, style and performance. For those who can't pony up $150,000 for a 911 iteration, here's your affordable entry into Porschedom and all the mystique and tradition that this legendary marque engenders.
The 1987 Porsche 951 is a sleeper. Stock, it ran with Corvettes and other exotics costing several times more, often eating them for breakfeast and dinner. With a few, relatively cheap performance modifications (chip/ exhaust), the 951 became a monster; substantially increased power coupled with superb handling screamed "Move Over" to everyone it ran down, including 911s.
If you are careful, do your homework and have a prepurchase inspection done on the 944 Turbo you bring home, you simply cannot get more bang for the buck, ensuring years of sheer, unadulterated driving pleasure. Having owned several BMWs (3 and 6 Series), let me tell you that with Porsche there's a noticeable step up in fit, finish and quality.
After four years of driving my 951 daily, everytime I see her at a distance, I am still struck by her flowing elegant lines, which combine with a robust, aggresive wide-track stance.
This car is timeless and a classic, and, perhaps you can tell, I have come to love her soul and spirit.
Welcome to the Brotherhood.
