This is the most outrageous car I've ever driven this side of a Z06 Corvette!
The overall fit and finish is fantastic - though the interior trim does leave a bit to be desired, there is just too much plastic.
All controls are out front and center, and illuminated in Pontiac red.
The power leather seats are very comfortable and offer plenty of adjustment. I am a good sized man, 6'1" and 235 lbs, and there is enough room for me. I rated this car a 4 out of 5 in comfort because it's a bit difficult to get out of for people with longer legs. The doors are long, and set a bit to the rear. It is a must to tilt the steering wheel up for easy entry and exits. People who are in the under six foot tall range will have an easier time with this.
The LS1 V8 has plenty of punch, with the "ram air" effect being noticeable at 70 mph, so passing is a breeze. The 4L60E electronic 4 speed automatic transmission is also up to the job with crisp, timely shifting. The differential is fitted with 3.23 gears (GU5), and provides a good balance of getting off the line and not being too busy at freeway speeds. My only nit pick here is this car has the very same cruise control on it as my 1984 El Camino did. I fully expect to see it again on the fifth generation Camaro -
Surely a car at this level deserves a cruise control with a coast function!
The engine starts easily and idles cleanly, warm or cold. The fuel injection is metered nicely, and returns mileage of about 15 mpg in the city and about 25 mpg on the open road.
There is minor amount of exhaust note and road noise present in the cabin at speed, but that's half of the fun!
This car loves to turn - there is a bit of wheel hop from the inside wheel during sharp corners with heavy throttle input. Lower control arms and relocation brackets will solve this issue nicely. At open road speed, the car takes a line in corners and hold it nicely, with only one finger steering inputs
needed. It also responds well in increasing/decreasing radius turns. The wide 275/45 R17 tires offer excellent grip, but also tend to follow things like road crowns, pavement wrinkles and tar strips. The car is rock solid stable traveling in a straight line.
The car also demonstrates a real sports car ride on pot hole filled roads, faithfully delivering all of the bone jarring bumps for an authentic seat of the pants feel. Open road comfort is generally good as this car has a touring type suspension. Anything up to eight tenths driving brings out the best in this car, but it needs some upgrading to be a truly competent ten tenther. It will definitely handle anything that is considered legal street driving.
The brakes are wonderful and progressive, slowing the car from any speed, and are not intrusive in any way. There is no exhibition of fading during normal street driving. I have tried to illicit a response from the ABS system, thanks to wide and sticky tires, the ABS just isn't easily activated under normal driving conditions.
The Monsoon stereo system is a delight to listen to, serving up plenty of volume for my classic "geezer rock" needs. The plastic button covers on the preset tuner have tried to peel/wrinkle off. It doesn't affect the button's functionality, just it's appearance.
I highly recommend this vehicle for any GM f-body enthusiasts!
