1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I recently bought a 1999 Grand Cherokee. Luckily, I knew what to look for before I bought mine so I was able to weed out the ones that will have more expensive problems in the future.

The best motor/transmission/transfer case combo for this Jeep is the 4.0L Inline 6 cylinder motor paired to the 4-speed Auto with the 231 or 242 transfer cases. The 231 is 2WD-4WD Part Time-Neutral-4 LO. The 242 is 2WD-4WD Part Time-4WD Full Time-Neutral-4 LO. Don't confuse the 242 with the All Time 4WD.

I chose the 4.0L over the V8s because I've changed alot of motors in Jeeps and the 4.0L motors usually only need changed because of high mileage. I've seen alot of premature failures in the V8s, usually because of oiling problems which leads to internal part failures. The oiling problems were not because of lack of maintenance either.


The model I bought was the Laredo. The interior is pretty roomy. I have a small baby and an 8 year old. I can fit the car seat in the middle of the backseat and son can ride next to car seat with plenty of room (and that still leaves another seat availiable). The controls are simple which is nice. The factory stereo plays burnt CDs which is nice, the 2002 wrangler I have will not play burnt discs.

It rides alot better than my regular cherokee and my wrangler. Seems to have better power at take off and on the interstate than either of my other Jeeps too. My wrangler is an 2002 with the same motor but the grand runs much stronger even being 3 years older and with 40k more miles on it.

Overall, I really like this Jeep. It looks good in the driveway. I feel good driving it. I would recommend this Jeep to anyone.

I've always liked the comfort and capability of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's a vehicle that you can take the family out to dinner in or go hunting with your buddies. I really enjoy the power of the 4.7L v-8 without sacraficing too much in fuel economy. Enough power to pull a trailer and it does so in comfort. Heated leather seats are wonderful in the winter. Easily maintained and parts are readily available. Highly recommended!!

This vehicle has a luxury feel to it wit the leather heated seats, premier sound system, temp read outs, 12 way power seats for both driver and passenger seats, visibility, etc. The down sides to this vehicle were first, a left front tie rod ready to come off that would have killed my 16 year old daughter this should have been caught by the seller before shipment, replacement of near illegal tire all four, replacement of headlight lenses as they were completely useless, four wheel alignment needed as soon as tires replaced, rear window wiper blade and arm completely worn out and unservicable, adjustment of driver power window as window would hardly open and close. other that these repairs this is a great vehicle which is reliable and strong for winter weather driving in western new york.

This is our second Grand Cherokee. Our first was a 1995 and was absolutely bullet-proof. When the new bodystyle came out in 1999, my wife decided she just had to have one. Very stylish and the options and amenities are first rate. Chrysler was doing a lot of things right at this time, especially listening to their customers (something they have failed to do recently with the junk they make now). We have the 6 cylinder by preference, an engine that has been going since the '50's. I like the little 6 banger; lots of torque, easy to work on, and more than adequate get up and go. Get this engine and you won't be sorry. Our car was the Laredo. I wouldn't buy this particular package again as I detest the fading of the plastic around the bumpers and doors. Too look good, you must apply Armor All or similar product at each washing. So the Limited or Overland will be our next choice. Also, I would only purchase the 2002-2004 models. Kinks were worked out by then and the next generation Grand is just simply awful. I've driven one and it is just no wonder the Big 3 is looking for a bailout. Cheaply made plastic and unitized at every turn. My selling dealer said Chrysler's name for it was "de-componetizing". That's not my term for it.....

I bought the car with about 90,000 miles in it. It has been pretty good. It does good for a 6 cylinder engine. 4 wheel drive works great. Most of the minor problems i'v had with it were a result of things that I had done with the exception of the rear windsheild wiper not working. Also, I had to replace the assembly for the passenger side window. Recently i'v been having some electrical problems with the driver door controls. I'v put the car through a few off-road adventures and it has held up pretty well. I also took it on a trip 1300 miles each way and it had no problems. The transmission just recently went out on it at 136,000 miles. I found out it had a tranny leak and had been low for a few weeks so that was an error on my part. Overall the vehicle still runs pretty well. I had to replace the front CV boots and fix a rear axle leak. The axle leak was from having a bad tire on it that wobbled. The engine is beginning to make a noise that worries me a little. As with all vehicles, frequently check all the fluids and change them as needed and the vehicle will be good for a long while. However, I hear these Jeeps are infamous for transmission and rear differential problems.

Car rides great,has very good interior features all the bells and whistle looks great on the outside has really great acceleration have the 4.7l 8cycl gets good gas mileage for the big engine(EX drove a milan which said it gets 35mpg 600 miles it used $70.00 in gas drove cherokee same miles which it says gets 20mpg cost me $90.00 great car very little engine worries and trans most complaints i read are with the front speakers blow which i replaced my with a great after market and it sounds great.
