The HUMMER H2 is a very capable off-road vehicle and as owners of a HUMMER H1, we're proud of this new model added to the HUMMER line (sorry, but we just can't say the same for the H3!)
We bought the base model H2 in Pewter and added Katzskin leather seating, the roof rack and the spare tire rack. Everything else we left standard, as we're not the "ultra-bling-bling" type people (which is fine for those who are but it's just not us) so the only chrome on our vehicle is on the standard grille. The one thing that we later regretted not having is the moonroof, but at least we got that on our next vehicle (Mercedes-Benz ML350).
Nothing lacking in the power department, the H2 goes wherever it wants to go and the hefty V8 takes it whenever it wants to go! The H2 does not only look like a ton of fun to drive, it is surprisingly quite an awesome ride! Depending on what you're used to driving, it is quite a heavy vehicle, but the weight also contributes to having such a smooth ride for a large-size SUV with 17" all-terrain tires.
It has a tremendous amount of cargo space, especially with the spare tire mount (we think it's just ridiculous to store the tire inside the cargo area!), without the 3rd row seat (c'mon, NO ONE wants to ride back there!) and with the 2nd row seating folded flat.
We've driven our H2 for 40 months and put over 60,000 miles on it...without any type of repairs needed, so its reliability is enthusiastically "Excellent". As far as comfort, we would have given it another "Excellent" but since our new Mercedes-Benz ML350 ranks higher in this category, we had to reluctantly rate it a "Good". The H2 is VERY comfortable, but let's be realistic, it's not a Mercedes! :)
The only reason we couldn't give an "Excellent" for quality and craftsmanship is because we'd like HUMMER to re-design the interior and make it a little more aesthetically pleasing. All right, maybe they want to retain its rugged feel and angular design, but at least they could make a few small changes to keep up with the rest of the SUVs. The interior practically had the same feel as our old 1996 GMC Sierra C/K 1500 pickup truck! So we really are dinging them for "design" and not "quality and craftsmanship" but this was the closest category out of the ones given.
Our overall satisfaction scored a 5 because if it were possible, we would've given 4.5 scores for "Comfort" and "Quality and craftsmanship" if it was possible. Had we not discovered the Mercedes-Benz second-generation M-Class AND since we did not have the need for another large-size SUV (as we kept our H1) AND if the newer model H2 improved its gas mileage, then we just might have purchased another H2. For those looking for a true SUV with high-performance off-road capabilities, huge cargo area and who don't mind the 13 mpg (city and freeway are the same), you should definitely check out the H2 before making your final decision.
