Background: This was my first truck. I bought it used in '96 with approximately 20,000 miles on the odometer and put about 10,000 miles on it before I traded up.
Performance: The 2.3L inline four cylinder engine is massively underpowered for a truck application. The engine produces 112 horsepower, and you'll need every one of those horsies just to maintain highway speed. Passing is out of the question, unless you have lots of clear, flat or downhill pavement ahead of you. The truck's payload was decent, but with this engine, motivating the truck's 3,000 lbs curb weight is payload enough. I average in the low 20's around town and in the upper 20's on the highway, which was one of the few positive trade-offs for such an underwhelming engine.
Reliability: I only had one problem during my tenure with the Ranger and that was that the washer blades would come on unexpectedly during driving. This was one, dangerous, as they came on full speed, and this was very distracting, and two, it was quite embarrassing when there was no rain, which was usually the case. The fix involved a simple switch replacement at about $100.
Comfort: This is a regular cab truck with bucket seats, so comfort was not great. Road noise inside the cab was pronounced. As this is an entry level truck and most likely used for school or work, I'm sure no one is going to complain much about the relative lack of comfort.
Quality and Craftsmanship: Other than the crazy wipers, the truck was rock solid. The twin I-Beam suspension was tough as nails, and while the engine was underpowered, it withstood the abuse of high revs very well.
Overall: A tough, inexpensive, value-oriented truck that will withstand a lot of abuse. Buying one now would be a good choice as a secondary vehicle or lumber-hauler. Just don't expect to haul much or tow much and give yourself plenty of time to get where you're going, and you won't be disappointed.
