1991 Ford F-150: 90-91 F150
02/10/08
I currently own a 1990 F150 XLT Lariat 4x4 5.0 V8 and a 1991 F150 Custom 4x2 4.9 I6. For reference, I also have a 1995 F150 XLT Flareside and a 2006 F150 XLT 4x4, but this review is only about the 90-91 models. The 90-91s are great work trucks, I've very little in the way of problems and the problems I had were related to the age and mileage of the trucks rather than craftsmanship.
The six cylinder has plenty of power to get the job done, but the V8 in the other truck packs more punch and the sound of a V8 just makes you feel like doing the Tim the Tool Man grunt!
On the inside, the Custom's interior is cold in the winter and generally noisy all the time compared to the interior of the XLT Lariat. The Custom's vinyl bench seat takes a little longer to feel warm on cold days than the cloth seats of the Lariat. Also, the Custom's bench seat makes longer trips a bit more fatiguing than the more comfortable seats of the the Lariat. The lack of head liner, carpeted lower door panels, and a rubber mat instead of carpet on the floor, all make the interior of the the Custom noisier than that of the Lariat. Seating for my 6'1" frame is a little cramped and really becomes uncomfortable if I have to spend more than an hour behind the wheel.
These trucks have one major problem; body rust! The doors, fenders, and beds rust like '80s Japanese cars! Fortunately, the replacement doors and body panels are widely available and relatively inexpensive.
In conclusion; great trucks for work and reliability, not so great for comfort, and horrible for rust.
