Many people shy away from buying a retired police vehicle, and many, when they do, purchase one for the wrong reasons.
I purchased one, among other reasons, because my son bought one. I bought mine because I was in an auto accident several years ago, and wanted a safer automobile. This has fulfilled my needs well because I don't normally have to put up with the type of drivers around me that precipitated that accident.
It is a clean, safe, and reliable automobile. The CHP (California Highway Patrol) runs mostly late model Crown Victorias these days. This car is basically the Lincoln Town Car, without the gingerbread. It usually retains all the power windows, door locks, and seats... sometimes rear door locks are disabled, so that is a good thing to look into when buying.
Despite the fact that the Crown Victoria is a large and heavy car, my gas mileage averages around 17 to 18 MPG in town, and 20 to 22 MPG on the freeway. Safety, as I mentioned, is a big plus in these autos. Front and side airbags are standard on the driver's side front and passenger's side front. The survival rate among officers involved in crashes in these automobiles is very high.
The CHP adheres rigorously to the maintenance schedule as prescribed by Ford Motor Company, so you can be reasonably assured that you will be getting a mechanically sound automobile. Most of these vehicles are auctioned off by the State of California when they reach the 100K mile mark. With these vehicles, the engine is just broken in. Typically, these vehicles are good for 600,000 miles.
The State removes all insignia, light bars and most other police equipment. It is best to search an ebayer who will do some refurbishing such as repainting where needed to remove fades in the paint. I would suggest Ebay Powerseller "in-pursuit" where I bought mine. Dealing with them was a pleasure.
Usually, the searchlights that are mounted on the front left and right roof posts are not removed, and in some cases, push bars are left in place. This is where I gave less that perfect for quality, as this equipment is installed by the state... pushbars are custom made, and as such are unique unto themselves. Actually, among some aficionados of these vehicles, this is what makes each automobile unique.
The upside of driving one of these vehicles is that people are very polite... they don't normally tailgate you or cut you off in traffic. The downside is, people tend to travel way less than the speed limit when they are around you.
If you're intention is to pretend you are a cop, you are buying for the wrong reason. With a mindset like that, you will not only attract the attention of law enforcement, but criminals as well.
