1998 Dodge Durango: Junk Durango

04/04/07
• Overall Satisfaction:
I purchased a 1998 Durango in November of 1997. The window regulators were faulty. Mine has had 22 replacements and there is one that currently does not work and has not worked for about 4 years now. There is one on e-bay right now that says one of the windows does not work, imagine that.

The front ball joints are junk, about 30,000 miles between replacements if your lucky not to mention the tires that it chews up when they go bad. Chrysler will tell you routine maintence will prevent the problem. Their right, about $750.00 every 30,000 miles will prevent it.

Chrysler has known for a very long time of these defects and refused to stand behind its product.

Don't think so, the first 13,000 built experienced an almost 100% failure rate on the windows and I have seen reports on approximately 49,000 failures. I filed a class action law suit agianst them over the windows and after years of appeals they have finally agreed to talk settelment. They have, however, accomplished their objective because the settlement will only apply to original owners of the vehicles and they know that most have already been traded. The suit only covers Missouri and that reduces the numbers even further (about 550 at present).

It appears that Chrysler has a strange way of expressing its appreciation to the customers that keep them in business.

Last July I retired the Durango to the garage (you couldn't keep it in one lane) and purchased a replacement vehicle, "Toyota".

Thanks Chrysler, "Oh What a Feeling"

1998 Dodge Durango: MY ARIZONA DODGE DURANGO

10/10/09(updated 10/10/09)
• Overall Satisfaction:
1998-2003 DODGE DURANGO WAS ONE OF THE BEST LOOKING MID SIZE SPORT UTILTIES IN ITS PRICE RANGE.
FULL OF APPOINTMENTS AND A GREAT ALL ROUND WORK HORSE. THE BASE 5.2L WAS GOOD BUT THE 5.9L MAGNUM IS AN AWESOME BEAST.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR THE ENTRY LEVEL SPORT UTILITY GUY LOOKING FOR SOMETHING ECONOMICAL ON THE POCKET BOOK TO BUY AND CHEAP TO MAINTAIN.

1998 Dodge Durango: 1998 Dodge Durango

03/07/09
• Overall Satisfaction:
I will admit I was a little scared when I bought a vehicle off of Ebay. I bought my Durango with 152,000 miles on it. I had read a ton of blogs complaining the Durango has a problem with engines gunking up. The Durango I bought on Ebay said the oil gauge drops from time to time. After further research, I found a blog of someone that had the same problem with their gauge. Said he flushed the engine 3 times to remove the gunk and it's been running perfect ever since. So I did the same and mine has been perfect since also. The comfort, space, power, and smooth ride of this vehicle more than makes up for having to pay an extra $10 for that first oil change. Our Durango has over 160,000 miles on it now and still drives like a champ. The oil gauge has not even dipped once.
The point is, vehicles do wear down and eventually wear out. I've seen too many people complain because something started going wrong with their vehicle after a while. Their is a such thing as 30,000 mile inspections. It's just part of good vehicle maintenance. Heaven for bid you have to spend some money on your vehicle ever few years. Maybe if you saved the money you spend on lawers to sue the motor company and spend it on your vehicle it would last you longer.
I strongly suggest doing research on a vehicle before buying. I suggest taking care of yur vehicle the way it was meant to be taken care of. It can save you tons of money and headache. This Durango however has not cost me either one, just a few hours on google doing research.
After all the research I've done, I love this Durango and would happily buy another one. (or maybe I just got LUCKY with mine, lol)

If you don't know what I'm talking about with all the vehicle maintenance stuff and the lawyers, read the other reviews, you'll see more positive than negative on this vehicle.

1998 Dodge Durango: Excellent Truck ! I am Very happy with it !

03/02/09
• Overall Satisfaction:
I love the way it drives , looks , the interior is great . It has plenty of room . the only thing I don't like about it is the gas Mileage . But I went from driving a 4 cylinder car to this truck with a V-8 , in it . But I think the MPG is good for this kind of vehicle.

1998 Dodge Durango: Great appearance, great performance.

06/07/07
• Overall Satisfaction:
I bought my 1998 Dodge Durango new and have been extremely satisfied with it since. I now have almost 160,000 miles on it and outside of routine maintenance have had no problems. I bought my Durango for the power for pulling a larger boat and it did it with no effort. I just recently had the ball joints replaced and had read that starting in 1999 some of the Durango had serious problems with them. When I contacted Dodge they apparently switched the ball joint parts manufacturer in 99 and the first year Dodge Durango were not affected. After 150,000 miles I guess they are ready to wear out! The only drawback of course is the gas mileage and with current gas prices I have thought of retiring my Durango but it's virtues outweigh the problems at the pump. So if you are looking for something economical gas wise then you are better off with a small vehicle but if you are wanting an SUV with great performance and muscle-car good looks go for the Durango.
