I drove my S-10 from the dealership in Riviera Beach, FL to central Tennessee--more than 900 miles--on county, federal, and state highways with a short period of time on several various interstates. Between the 18-wheelers and strong headwinds, I was buffeted side-to-side and felt not very safe so I enjoyed the countryside by taking ignored back roads home.
AMERICA really is BEAUTIFUL!!
During the daytime, there was a stretch of four-lane highway where no vehicles passed me for 14 miles--can you imagine?--and I was doing the speed limit of 55.
There were other times when I could go three-to-eight-miles before my vehicle was overtaken and passed. The speed limits varied from 50 to 65mph on the open road--I can live with that.
I passed fruit stands--I stopped and bought fresh 2009 Georgia soft-shelled pecan nutmeats and delicious plums; several signs told of a watermelon sales stand--I bought three; another sign stated that
"FRESH BROWN EGGS" were for sale--I bought two dozen.
There were many police 'speed traps' along the way but since I wasn't speeding, they did bother me.
My new 1999 Chevrolet S-10 made the trip in style although the front seat's back cushion could have used more padding--I stopped at a WalMart along the way and bought a bed pillow to help my aching back.
It would have been nice to have had CRUISE CONTROL--I have become spoiled by having it on my other vehicles--and since the S-10 didn't have it, by the time I reached home, my right foot and ankle were really tired and sore from pressing the accelerator down for over
900 miles.
About 10 miles of interstate highway driving after leaving the dealership, the 'SERVICE ENGINE SOON' light came on. I exited the expressway and called the dealership. The person on the other end said that it had something to do with the gas tank sensor and that it would go off shortly. 50 miles later the indicator light went out--100 miles after that, it came back on and stayed on all the way to Tennessee. I'm getting it checked out later today.
The STARTER was another problem. You turned the key, it sounded like it was not going to turn over and then, it did. It NEVER FAILED when called upon to start--it's getting checked out today when my local dealership checks the 'SERVICE ENGINE SOON' sensor problem.
You don't realize how much you miss POWER DOOR LOCKS and POWER WINDOWS until you drive a vehicle without them.
My new S-10 has opening window vents on the stretch part of the cab and tiny fold-down-seats behind the front seat--when I say tiny, I mean tiny--you'd need to be a tiny child to be able to squeeze in there and be remotely comfortable.
The rear window of the cab is solid glass all the way across--it doesn't open although it would be nice if it did.
The little S-10 has an add-on radio with a hidden CD player. It only plays one CD at a time. I listen to books-on-tape while driving on LONG trips. I needed to make many short stops to change CDs when one ended--it was too dangerous to open the CD book box, remove a CD, take the one out of the radio and put a new one in, and put the old one back in its container while driving. I needed to keep my eyes on the road at all times.
The S-10 didn't have a clock. I don't wear a watch. Do you see a problem here?
My S-10 has a four-cylinder engine that really moves when asked to do so--I got between 21- and 25-mpg based upon how fast I was driving--lower mpg at higher speeds and higher mpg at lower
