1999 Jeep Wrangler: Muddy Hummer? Yeah Right !!

10/12/07(updated 08/09/08)
• Overall Satisfaction:
This is the undisputed king of all-road vehicles, but living with a Jeep Wrangler is much easier than it used to be.

The Wrangler was completely redesigned and re-engineered in 1997 and the result was a vast improvement over its predecessors in every respect. Now it's quieter, roomier and more comfortable. It rides better. It handles better. It's more capable off road. And it's affordable.

Yet the Wrangler remains true to its gritty heritage dating back to World War II when Jeeps served with distinction around the globe.

Jeep's Wrangler is available in three models. At first glance, the base SE looks attractive, but its low price quickly rises when carpeting, nicer seat fabric, a rear seat, a stereo and other options are added. Not having a rear seat is certainly an option for those who don't think they'll ever use it. The SE comes with a 4-cylinder engine that is best teamed with the standard 5-speed gearbox.

Sport and Sahara models come with the much more powerful 4.0-liter 6-cylinder engine.

One of the biggest decisions when buying a Wrangler is selecting the top. Purists prefer the soft top, a high-quality piece of equipment that can be configured according to the weather. Folding the top down takes only a third of the time it took before, and if a screwdriver is handy, the windshield can be flipped down for breezy, low-speed touring in the back country. The side curtains, however, can be a hassle in everyday use. Stopping at a toll booth in the rain can mean a lap full of water when the side curtain is unzipped.

The hard top provides more security for expensive gear. The hard top also offers better protection from weather. It comes with full-height doors and wind-up windows. Driving one at dawn through a violent thunderstorm felt dry and secure. Rearward visibility is aided by the rear-window defroster, wiper and washer. Wind noise is greatly reduced. The top can be removed and stored when not in use.

Wrangler isn't a luxury car, but isn't the penalty box it used to be. Paved roads seem much smoother. Corners are handled with more dignity. It feels stable at 80 mph. And wet pavement is not to be feared. At the same time, the Wrangler's off-road capability is superior to that of even the legendary Jeep CJ. It's an impressive balancing act.

Greater approach and departure angles mean the Wrangler can cross trenches and clamber over rocks and fallen trees that would trap the old Jeep. Few vehicles can match the Wrangler's rock-climbing ability. At the same time, it does not feel like a utility truck when winding down a curvy road. Still, the Wrangler is no sports car. Its handling is competent, but the basic design is essentially truck, with a slightly higher center of gravity. Hurrying this or any sport-utility vehicle around tight corners is not a good plan.

Overall improvement for 1999 Wrangler (versus 1998 and previous TJ):

* Hood cowl changed from a "3 section" wide cowl with allot of plastic
around it to a smaller all metal cowl.
* Removed annoying useless vent that leaks water
* Cruise control controls on steering wheel
* Rotary climate controls with bi-level air
* Defeat switch for passenger-side air bag
* Improved ECM
* Re-designed catalytic converter
* Nineteen gallon fuel tank now standard.

2007 Jeep Wrangler: My Wrangler Unlimited 4 door Saraha Edition Hardtop

01/31/07
• Overall Satisfaction:
I feel my jeep is the perfect blend between a tough dependable vehicle like all jeeps and a family vehicle. To my knowledge it is the first jeep ever to have plenty of room for four on a long trip and can seat five with minium discomfort. This is the first jeep that crosses over well from daily driver to family vehicle to off road ability seamlessly.
The thing to keep in mind if you test drive one of these is you are not driving a minivan or soccer mom SUV. Also you are definitely not driving a car or even some of the newer trucks. What you are driving is a jeep with all the stiffness and utilitarian design of it's predecessors. If you want a lot of plush comfort go elsewhere. Not to say the jeep is not comfortable with comfortable and adjustable fabric seats, tilt steering, power windows, power locks, great heat and air, and a nice stereo system with Cd player and MP3 player jack. It just rides and handles like a jeep which to some (those in the know) is a good thing.
I have only found three drawbacks. I have found there is a lack of driver accessible storage in the console and glovebox. I solved this by getting visor cd holders that also had room for my sunglasses and a couple other small things allowing me to get rid of my cd wallet freeing up room. Also some of the stuff I would normally put in a console or glovebox fits in the built in storage in the "trunk". The other problem is the size of the gas tank. I get good mileage by jeep standards (over 20mpg city) however my range is a little more limited than I would like between fills. This is not that big of a problem as all you have to do is fill up before heading out a long distance and I have never seen that long between stations anyway. The final thing I wish was different is the lack of aftermarket accessories. What I want most are half doors and a bimini or safari top for spring and summer use however as of yet no one has them. I can get the doors at the dealer but the price makes you think they were made of gold. The top however is a different matter as it is only an aftermarket item and not yet available for unlimited much less 4 door models. Both of these annoyances will be solved as they come out with these and many other aftermarket accessories which should be about mid year.
Finally there are a few features that put this over the top as far as I am concerned. The top is a new modular hard top with a couple quick flips and two twists the front two panels come off and you have a sunroof. If you want more fresh air the rear comes off by removing 6 torx screws however it takes two people to handle it during removal (thus the desire for the bimini or safari top for summer). Best of all just like all it's ancestors the doors come off and windshield folds down giving you maximum airflow when off road. All in all this is a great vehicle for those who have both a family and a wild side and need something to satisfy both.

Climbs like a goat off-road. With hardtop, suprisingly quiet on-road. 77,000 miles now and all I've needed are one set of tires and a battery. In FL with flat roads, not bad on gas with cold air kit and cat-back. Try one...you'll want one. No, I have nothing to do with Chrysler or Jeep.

1990 Jeep Wrangler: I love it. but it is not for everyone. need some mechanical skills for it

I bought the jeep as a project. I knew it would require a lot of work to get it where I wanted it. I like the styling. the 90 has the carbureted engine and it ran very poorly when I got it. I have since fixed most of it's problems and it is performing pretty nicely. in a year or two I plan to swap in a 4.0 fuel injected engine from my old cherokee but overall the jeep is exactly what I was looking for.
