Volvo S40

I purchased my S40 T5 AWD in January 2007 as a certified used vehicle and have owned it for almost a year now. This car may not quite have the polish of my friend's new BMW 330 but it's darn close...and for about half of the price used. It will definately outperform the BMW in certain situations, and the 6-speed manual is amazing. Accelerating, cornering and stopping performance of the S40 have me looking for the 'long way' home much of the time. Highway driving is equally as enjoyable in this car with supportive seats and a quiet, solid feel. As a young professional (late 20's) with young family, this car seemed to be a very sensible choice for my lifestyle, while providing exciting driving charactaristics and unique style which are very important to people of my generation. I regularly get compliments on the S40 in parking lots, at gas stations, and from people who ride with me. Reliability has been outstanding as well with no unscheduled visits to the dealer. This is the second Volvo in our garage (my wife drives an XC-70) and it is safe to say our brand loyalty will continue based on our experience with these two vehicles.

There was a change over in some of the suspension parts during 2000, so there are two different parts depending on the production date. You may want to check if parts can be procured for your individual auto. I understand that some of these parts may be hard to find. (cv axles and struts)

Excellent vehicle after I fixed it. I have one 2001 XC already and the car is tons better built than a new VW. Especilly A/C & heat which the VW haven't figure out yet!

I completed this transaction because I felt an ebay auction obligation. The fraudulent representation wasn't realized till it was paid for and taken in for service right after the check was given.This dealer told bold face lies about the condition of the car. He should be barred from any further auctions on ebay.
When confronted about his misrepresentations, he just blew me off. Upon further research, I found out that he has done this before to other people. How has he maintained a high rating when he has done the same to other ebay buyers. This is absolutely the worst experience I have ever had on ebay. In the past, if there was ever some question about an item I have always been able to work it out satisfactorily.This is the type of seller that giver good and fair car dealers a black eye.
His dealership seems to be out of his home and not a real legitimate location.False representation has no place on ebay and can't be tolerated. This should be done immediately so as not to hurt any further legitimate buyers. I bought this car new from a dealer with specs i wanted (sunroof, leather seats, spoiler). The Volvo reputation for safety and quality had me looking for the least expensive (all I could afford). I've had experience with many NEW cars both US/Japanese made vehicles and had bad luck with electrical problems, freq repairs, etc.
To date, my 2002 S40 stills runs like brand new! I spend a lot of time in the DC area (known for potholes) and lotsa highway commuting.Only problems I've had are wear and tear items like tires at 40K and 90K, Brakes/rotors 90k, oil changes every 3k miles. THE NEGATIVE: if you follow the recommended maintance with the dealership, it can be costly at 600-800 every 15k miles or so.....I neglected the first 60K miles, but finally got one done at 65k. YES, I'm overdue for another many miles ago.
OVERALL: has been very good despite the neglect and runs beautifully, takes off great, and oh.....with any car---the leather helps keep the car looking new even with pets and kids constantly spilling things!!!!!!

I had nothing but problems since I bought it it cost me $2000 just to get up to par for state inspection and its been nickel and diming me evr since I am getting a replacement for it and planning on selling cheap.Not on ebay

I am the owner of a 2001 Volvo S40 1.9L Turbo. I use this vehicle daily for commuting and pleasure travel. I put it through its paces on the highway, city (even rough potholed areas), and suburban roads. Overall I am satisfied with this vehicle. I purchased it this past October when it had 147,000 miles on it from its original owner who was kind enough to properly care for it. Its performance thus far matches that of an average vehicle. Although it is a Turbo it does seem to lag a bit when I stomp on the gas. It responds well however to sudden turns and braking is good. Reliability is Good. The only issue it seems to have is the NONSTOP check engine light (which appears to be a known problem with this line if you do your research on the web!) which comes on for every little thing so you will spend much time chasing ghosts as, after much hunting, I have not had any real mechanical or electrical issues with the car. The only true major issue I had to deal with was replacing an old battery so there appears to be nothing aside from your average wear and tear you'll have to concern yourself with. Comfort: Well again I rate it average. The interior is not too well soundproofed so there is a bit of a rise in ambient sound if you are flying down the highway. The seats are ok but after awhile your lower back does begin to feel the stresses of sitting in the seats over time.The seat controls are ok. The dashboard cluster is not the most ergonomically designed one on the planet. The drink holder is on the center of the dash above the stock stereo/CD/tape deck. The radio controls are confusing to use and sometimes a pain. The environmental controls do work well and are simplistic in design. Back seat space is fair although I think legroom back there is a bit lacking. The backseats drop down allowing you to peer into the trunk or load large items. Interior lighting is satisfactory as you have overhead lights by the driver/front pass area AND a light unit just over the backseat pass seats. You also have lighting in the front seat leg wells.You have storage spots under the dash, the center armrest, the front doors, and the glove compartment so you have more than enough space to put your registration, shades, maps, whatever at close reach. Quality/Craftsmanship: All in all this Volvo S40 has shown decent quality and craftsmanship. It is 8 years old, and although its previous owner was a literal old lady who treated it well, I stress-tested this car (Oct 2008 to April 2009 the vehicle has amassed 10,000 miles) and it has held up remarkably well. I purchased this car because I need a means to get around rapidly after losing another auto to a divorce. I needed a solid reliable car that would perform its purpose well, get me from point A to point B reliably and safely without fail and be able to put up with hard usage. It did all that. And it does look good doing it too. If you want a good looking car that does the job, this is it. Oh and the Volvo S40 did a good job of breaking out of the "shoe-box" look that Volvo had for years as its basic car design!

I love the syling of both the interior and exterior of the car...it's very modern and Scandinavian. The high-tech key/remote all-in-one is really cool too. The car has really great acceleration and it handles exceptionally well. I live in Ohio and on the coldest day I can remember (minus 14 degree fahrenheit) the car started right up, no problem and it's front-wheel drive, so it handles very well in the snow. Mine has a black leather interior and I love the grain of the leather that Volvo uses and the seats are second-to-none for comfort on a long trip. The standard stereo system sounds really great and unlike most car stereos with only 6 radio presets, the S40 has 10 radio presets, which you can toggle through with the steering wheel mounted controls (if equipped). My car magazine said that the S40 shares something in the neighborhood of 60% of it's parts with the Mazda 3, which probably has to do with why it has excellent reliability. Lastly, being that Volvo is a little bit higher-end, it carries a 4-year, 50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, which is better than most other cars.
