The good, got it at the price of a 2000-03 vechicle and the milage was average 57K miles,Very good gas milage for the manual tranny,I got the very basic model, mostly all manual, tranny, windows, locks but at the base level it comes with a AM-FM-CD and suprisingly a power trunk release.I was looking for a backup car to my CTS and I wasnt looking for a ton of options either. The 2.2 liter engine is easy to work on but dont expect superfast performance,I can make the tires chirp with the stick and I'm very sure with aftermarket mods this car can scream, but I did not buy the car for that.once again for the price I save at least close to 2K,and I did not want the automatic tranny.Car is great in the snow as the CTS is rear wheel drive and a set of winter tires and rims would run at least over 1K used or close to 2K new for a set,so for this price I ended up getting another car.I bought from a dealership out in Long Island and the car has a excellent carfax record. So far no problems If you take care of this car it will last, but up here in NYC the salt will most likely kill the body before the engine goes.Car has some pep with a stick shift, gets great milage, has a nice sized gas tank at least 14 gallons so can be taken on a long trip but the car is not comfortable and if you are tall forget about it.I'm 5'9" and I have the seat all the way back for comfort. The back seat is good for kids only as this is a 2 door, but most of the times it's only myself in the car.I have always owned GM cars and dodge cars but I tend to stay away from foriegn cars as I feel the quality of American cars are getting much better and I rather keep it here in the USA.This is a good first car for a teenager and I feel the all teens should be REQUIRED to drive stick so they cant yak or text on a cellphone.since there is not a lot of power goodies in the car, crank windows, push button locks and using the key to open the door, lever to push the seat back,I wouldnt have to worry about those quirks when they occur.Believe it or not the 2005 has ABS.The clutch is tight but responsive, engine has some pep with a 5 speed, the reverse has a lockout you have to lift the collar to go into reverse and the car has to be at a full stop. There are plenty of these cars on the road, even the sunfire which is basically the same car.
the G5s pontica is the same car and so is the Cobalt. The 2.2 liter engine can be found in a lot of GMs front wheel drive cars and it comes originally from the Saturn line.I feel that GM layed an egg by discontinuing the Pontica and Saturn lines, they should of kept like two models for Pontiac, the G8 and the solstice,Saturn could of kept 3 models so there wont be too much duplication on the GM lines. All in all this is a very good basic means of transportation, and if you do the maintance as required this car can last for years. The Cobalt is the replacement for the Cavalier, but the guts are the same only the body is different.Of course if you dont do your homework with this car you can get stuck with a lemon.
