What it's Worth - Price Range Information
Just Sold on eBay Motors
The Just Sold on eBay Motors price range represents the lowest and highest completed sale price for this vehicle on eBay Motors within the last 90 days.
Kelley Blue Book Suggested Retail Value Range
The Kelley Blue Book Suggested Retail Value is representative of dealers' asking prices and is the starting point for negotiation between a consumer and a dealer. This Suggested Retail Value assumes that the vehicle has been fully reconditioned and has a clean title history. This value also takes into account the dealers' profit, costs for advertising, sales commissions and other costs of doing business. The range represents asking prices that typically occur for the vehicle model throughout the United States, not all vehicles sell for the exact same price, which is why the company also offers a value range. By showing both the low and high ends of the range the company can better reflect whether a given vehicle's asking price varies widely or hardly at all. The final sale price will likely be less depending on the vehicle's actual condition, popularity, type of warranty offered and local market conditions. This range includes pricing for used vehicles, not new or late model vehicles.

2006 Porsche Boxster: Porsche Boxster and Boxster S - The 987
12/27/06
50 of 50 people found this review helpful.
• Overall Satisfaction:
I've owned both a 2005 Porsche Boxster and 2006 Boxster S, the second generation (987) of this mid-engined roadster icon. My review is more applicable to these years than the 97-04 version (986). Much has been written about the excellent driving experience so I'll focus my comments on things to be aware of before purchasing and model pricing, which can be all over the map due to the tremendous amount of OE customization available.

Things to be aware of:
* Early returns on model reliability have been excellent
* These cars chew through expensive tires, especially so on the rears (life = 20-25k front, 12-20k rear)
* Service is at 20k intervals minor/major but costs are reasonable (in-line with competitors). However, overall running costs are not "cheap" (premium gas required) so cost of tires + service + gas should be evaluated before purchasing
* Insurance is not prohibitive as the car is excellent at accident avoidance due to world-class braking and handling as well as excellent safety equipment(includes thorax airbags, for example - first on roadster)
* Car has class-leading cargo space with both front and rear trunks, but can carry only one golf bag in rear
* Ipod integration is difficult and costly, which is a major sore-spot with owners
* In-cabin noise (the engine is right behind your head) can be intrusive (welcomed by some). Surprisingly, engine noise is louder in the base than the S model.
* The shifter/transmission/pedals on Porsches have a different feel than other makes, so it's recommended that manual transmission samples that have accumulated some miles be test-driven to avoid those that have been "worked-over" by the less-capable
* Porsches also have a 2000 mile break-in period that some choose not to follow. Caveat emptor.

Price and Options:

Porsche options are exceptionally expensive and the Boxster's standard kit is only average compared to competitors. One should also note that there has been an increase in horsepower/torque on the 07 models that can be expected to depress pricing on 05-06 models (and already has).

Most popular value-add options that would improve resale would be:

* PCM-Navigation
* Xenon HID headlights
* PASM - adjustable suspension
* Sport Chrono - Stopwatch function on dash, also integrates with OBC/PCM
* Adaptive Sport seats
* Regular Sport Seats
* Wind deflector (a must, and optioned on most samples)
* Embossed headrests (Porsche crest)
* Bose stereo (the standard stereo is not so good and the Bose only a marginal improvement)
* 19" wheels on the S (18" on the base, which comes with 17" rims as standard kit)
* Hard top
* Colored wheel-caps
* Sport steering wheel
* Roll bars painted exterior colour
* Center-console painted exterior colour
* Tire Pressure Monitoring System (Standard on 07+)

Options that are expensive but with less discernible value or that show only a fractional return in resale, would include:

* Sport Design Package, although so-equipped samples are rare($5,865 as option)
* Special interior trims (wood, aluminum, carbon-fiber) - Expensive to option
* Full or two-tone leather
* Sport shifter
* Remote CD changer
* Power seats (more power capabilities than standard seats)
* Self-dim mirrors and rain sensors
* Park assist
* Porsche ceramic brakes ($8,150 as option)
* Tiptronic S (automatic transmission)
* Sport exhaust

Good luck with your Boxster purchase and feel free to contact me for more details

2001 Porsche Boxster: A joy to own

This my second 986 model Boxster, the first a '99 and this a '01S. The car has been a joy to own and to drive. Living in an area of dense traffic, I opted for the Tiptronic transmission, an automatic with manual shifter buttons on the steering wheel. It is exceptional, having several shift modes that sense your driving style and change the shift points and shift speed according to what it senses would be appropriate. There are race drivers who actually prefer the Tip over the manual and claim their lap times are faster with it.

I do recommend a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) paid for by the potential buyer and performed by the Boxster-familiar mechanic who will maintain the car (or at least not by a friend of the seller). This should cost about 2-3 hours of labor but will tell you the condition of the car and what you can expect to need in the way of repairs. It should help you avoid the beater that looks good but which will need lots of work.

To address some concerns others have mentioned: I get 20k on my rear tires driving briskly. I have the alignment set up to favor even tire wear over all out handling, this done by a Porsche racing mechanic who knows what works on these cars.

My experience over 4 years and 16k miles with cars that had from 20k to 52k on them and were bought used is the repair costs have averaged $20 per month (not counting scheduled maintenance, oil changes, tire changes, etc). Tires are expensive (~$225 each)if you buy good ones, but can be had for less than $100 for lesser tires. Yes, Porsche repair and parts costs are high. I buy many OEM parts (example made by Bosch and exactly the same part as what Porsche labels and puts markup on) to reduce my repair costs, do some of the maintenance work myself and some at independent mechanics and some at the dealers.

There are many guides to do it yourself maintenance and many online forums where you can ask questions and receive advice (ppbb.com is a very friendly place).

I've written a rather extensive guide to buying a 986 Boxster with input from many others (http://mike.focke.googlepages.com/mikesporscheboxsterwebpages)that may be helpful.

Would I do it again, absolutely. In fact when I wrecked my first (my fault) I bought another. It makes me volunteer to go to the store and to go to the farthest store I can find <grin>.

The car has great active safety (handling/brakes) and good passive safety that I tested by totaling my first Boxster while walking away with no aches or scratches at all.

I've rated it a 4 on most areas because it doesn't have 400HP, isn't as reliable as a Honda, doesn't have the most room of a sedan, etc. But there is no category for "most fun" and that is what influences my overall satisfaction score. It is more than the sum of its parts and to drive a twisty road with the top down on a nice day is near heaven.

We were looking for a Porsche with a standard transmission (stick shift). This particular car allowed us to get the stick shift plus a more powerful engine than we expected at a price we could afford.
Other bonuses were the milage on the car being under 10,000 and it was in perfect condition. The after-market wheels whose rims are 9" front & 10" rear not only look great but are especially good for tracking (DE events).
We really wanted the stick for track events but the car is in such good condition we decided to hold off on tracking until after the 2010 Porsche Parade in Chicago during which this car will be entered in the Concours de Ellegance. We are very pleased with our purchase even though we were a nervous wreck during the experience. We had virtually no familiarity with this kind of a purchase on ebay but it all worked out. We thank ebay for the way the system is set up. This is our first purchase on ebay but definately not the last.

2003 Porsche Boxster: Porsche Boxster

After 41 years of waiting, I bought a Porsche, a 2003 Boxster S. The engine is strong, the gates on the 6 speed manual are better defined than my wife's 2008 BMW 335i. This is a very fast car. It runs right up to 7000 rpm without hesitation. The exhaust starts to really hum about 5 grand. My friend who proudly owns a 2009 Mustang was stunned at how fast the engine spins up and how smooth the ride is. I was also pleasantly surprised at how little the insurance was, but that may be a function of my age and driving record.

Everything from the heated seats to the power top works like new. I drove it 700 miles the day I bought it and got 26 mpg. I have a bad back and felt as good when I stepped out as when I stepped in. After six years it still has that fine leather smell when you open the door. The windows look small with the top up, but the front and rear slope down at such a quick slope that you actually have an excellent field of view in all directions. The car is very responsive in all ways. There is more leg room than I need and my 6 foot 4 friend had no trouble fitting.

The front and rear trunks add up to about triple the space of my old Fiero, but are by no means expansive. I figure a suitcase and two carry ons would about do it. The top does not fold into the trunk so you lose no space whether it is up or down unlike the BMW convertible.

This is a mid-engine car and so handles differently than most American cars, but I was used to that with the Fiero which was also mid-engine. The clutch is very stiff and probably takes about 30 pounds of pressure to depress. I suppose this could be a problem for some people. It also disengages very near the floor.

In all I am very happy with the car. The exterior paint is perfect and the interior shows almost no wear anywhere except the emergency brake handle. The top show a little scuffing where someone apparently tried to clean it with a brush where it folds and tends to collect a little dirt. It's a grey roof, where most of them are black, and therefore shows the dirt more.

The car does attract attention where I live. Why did I buy it? A skate boarder by a stop light summed it all up, "Really cool car old guy!" Why did I wait so long?

This is my fourth Porsche, and my first Boxter. It is as fun a car as you will ever find, without the quirks of the 911. It is reasonably fast (base model, 225 HP) has superb handling, steering and brakes, and is all Porsche. There is really nothing to compare with it, althought the new Zs are a contender. No flaws that I have found at 43,000 miles, except that the trunks won't fit my golf clubs! If you ever want to own a true, modern sports car that won't ever disappoint you, get one before the Feds make them illegal for being too much fun!

I love the curves and the shape of its design. The engine wants you to push it hard, but gladly I can easily avoid temptation by turning on the awesome stereo; it sounds like you were in a concert stadium (even with the top down). I bought my boxster as a get away toy; something my wife and I can enjoy from time to time. I love the car and I plan to keep it for as long as I can.

The styling of the Boxster is second to none. The S version packs enough power with it's 3.2 litre engine. A six speed transmission is a must. The only draw back are oil changes ($160.00) and 60K mile service ($799.00). Outside of that I recommend this over any other car in it's class.

I got my 2008 Boxster S Limited Edition online almost 3 months ago with <6K miles and showroom shape, and I still have a smile on my face. This vehicle was in fantastic shape, and a great value, and fitted with a Tubi exhaust system (google it). At first, the ostentatious roar of the exhaust took a little getting used to, but it didn't take long. What a joy it is to have the top down roaring down the interstate at 75 m.p.h. and you can still listen to the stereo or talk to your seat mate. If you care about driving at all, you can't help but fall head-over-heels over this. I can't tell you how many comments I've gotten on this car, and I could easily have spent more on a brand new, lesser vehicle. I actually had a kid run after my car after I turned into my neighborhood, shouting "I LOVE your car!" :-)

This is my first Porsche. I thought I would try buying a used one first to see if I liked the experience. The Boxster was a natural choice as I prefer convertibles and value nimble handling over outright power. Plus, I always wanted a Boxster since they first came out a dozen years ago. I still think they are among the most striking looking designs on the road today. And the early Boxsters are selling for the lowest prices since they came out and are probably at the bottom of their depreciation curve. I have owned (and own) a number of sports/performance cars. In addition to this Boxster, I currently have a 1991 Mazda Miata and a 2002 BMW 330i. Before selecting a Boxster I drove a BMW Z3 M, Honda S2000, and 1987 Porsche 911. I really liked all those cars and settled on the Boxster because I got it a a good price.

The Boxster is a wonderful driving automobile. True to its Porsche heritage the handling is phenomenal and the controls respond with precision. I am not a power junkie, instead I favor cars that are well balanced and fun to drive. This car is fun to drive. It is especially rewarding to drive on tight two lane roads with lots of curves.

I also like that it is light weight. It weighs less than 2800 pounds and feels nimble as a result. Not quite as nimble as a Miata but in exchange it is more substantial feeling. It gets decent gas mileage, over 25mpg on my last tank, is small and maneurvable and fits into virtually any parking space.

If I had to do it over again, I would probably choose to spend a little more and get an example that is in mint condition with a complete service history and an diligent owner. The one I bought (which I bid on sight unseen) was rougher than I imagined based on the seller's description and needed quite a bit of work. Porsche parts are quite expensive. There was a lot of little things wrong with the car that has taken time to fix. I would have rather spent that time driving the car rather than being underneath it.
