This is my second Aveo, the first having been broadsided in the driver's side by a pickup truck that ran a red light. Based on the intact passenger compartment and that I walked away from the accident without appreciable injuries, I decided to replace the 2005 model with a 2006. It is a very strong, well built car that I am comfortable letting my family drive knowing they should be quite safe.
This car now has 68000 miles since new. I heartily suggest following the recommended maintenance, especially replacing the timing belt at 60000 miles. You don't want to repair the jewel-like dual-overhead cam engine following the interference between the pistons and valves. I understand that can be a very expensive repair, one that I took great pains to avoid.
Typical gas mileage around town is 32 with the 5 speed (no air conditioning). On the road, holding 65 or so, I've gotten as much as 39, though 37 to 38 seems a bit more likely. I also will run the car at the posted speed limit on the Interstate, 75 in parts of Colorado and Nebraska, and still get very good mileage.
I don't like to drive the car more than twelve hours at a stretch. After that it gets a bit uncomfortable. I also use ear plugs to cut the wind noise when the windows are open. Although the cabin is sparse, I have found the layout to be very friendly and comfortable around town or on shorter (300 - 500 miles) trips.
The engine truly comes in to its own around 3500 RPM. Going up various mountain passes in Colorado, I've found that fourth gear (the 1:1 ratio) is your friend. On rare occasions, above 10000 feet and on steep grades, I may select third to pass slower cars. Acceleration is not outstanding, but the car keeps up with traffic and merges well on the Interstate. Again the key being the magic number of 3500 RPM.
On the open road (I-80 in Nebraska, I-70 in Kansas and Colorado) I am often hard pressed not to speed. Once the car is rolling, it likes to sit at 80+ miles per hour. Once, in Nebraska, my daughter was cruising at 95 and the car felt stable. When I realized how fast she was driving, we changed drivers.
On the down side, the interior has a lot of plastic. But what basic car doesn't? The cloth inserts on the door panel blend nicely with the cloth seats. The trim fits well and has stayed intact.
The car has a surprising amount of room for cargo when you drop the back seat. We often refer to the car as the Aveo Pickup only because it is so handy for medium sized loads. With the back seat up, the cargo space is limited. I've frequently had four adults in the car, and once had five. Yes, the fit was tight, but everyone had a proper seat belt so we were legal.
Would I get another one? I'll tell you in three to five years if and when this one wears out. So far, after four years of owning Aveo hatchbacks, and almost 80000 miles, I am quite satisfied with the car.
