2001 Pontiac Trans Am: Modern Day Classic

01/11/07(updated 12/07/11)
• Overall Satisfaction:
The 2001 and 2002 model years are basically the same cars except that the 2002 had a collector's edition in a yellow and black color scheme. They have the high performance LS1 engine that produces 310 HP in the base Trans Am and 325 HP in the WS6 version. The 2001 convertibles are quite rare already as only 396 were produced in the regular T/A and another 796 in the WS6 T/A. These ragtop cars sold for well over $30,000 which accounts for the low production, plus the model year ended early in May 2001 to get the Quebec plant ready to roll out the final year 2002 Trans Ams. These ultra low production numbers spell future classic as the years pass by. Having owned both a 1996 and a 2001 I can speak with some experience in saying that these cars are American muscle at it's finest. Extremely fast cars that handle very well and attract lots of attention. The engines are very solid, and if not abused and raced, will last easily past 150,000 miles. Unfortunately many Trans Ams have been abused by their owners and any potential buyer needs to do their homework to make sure the car was owned by the right person, otherwise you will be buying trouble. No car can take abuse no matter how well made. Some repairs to expect over the course of time in these Trans Ams are the headlight motors and gears which raise and lower the headlamps, the power window motors, and some owners have complained of door panel cracks on the interior side of the door (cosmetic issue). Tires are rather expensive (Goodyear GSD3 replacements are $150+ per tire) and you should not buy cheap tires for these cars. Thay are a bear to handle in wet weather due to all the power to the rear wheels and getting cheap tires will make matters even worse. Young drivers need to be aware of VERY high insurance costs. Check first if that is a financial issue. Convertibles carry even a higher comprehensive insurance cost if you opt for that. Just things to keep in mind. With those negatives being said, you will not find a better American muscle car (other than Corvette which has the same LS1 engine in these model years) on the road. The cockpit fits nicely and the cars are a delight to drive. The Trans Am actually brings a smile to your face every time you turn the key. They are that much fun to drive. ***Update Dec '11. Nothing has changed my impression or review since the last time I wrote about this wonderful car. Extremely reliable and the 'thumbs up' from so many people gets more evident as the years go by. Hard to believe this car is now 11 years old. No repair issues to report, just normal maintenance. Change those fluids (Dexcool, power steering, brakes, etc..) and the car will reward you with excellent longevity.

Hello, I bought this 1974 Trans Am Super Duty on eBay. I never saw the car in person but felt the man I was dealing with was honest and reliable. I also felt secure because the car was covered by the eBay buyer protection plan.
When the car arrived it was exactly as described and how I hoped it would be. I was afraid at first but glad I had the guts to try it. Will

So I won this bid, and the seller told me he had a death in the family and would call me back in two weeks to arrange to pick up the vehicle. He never called me, and I have been calling and texting him for a week with no reply.

1973 Pontiac Trans Am: Trans ams from Swannanoa

11/20/12(updated 12/18/12)
• Overall Satisfaction:
While these cars are great please be careful when buying ANY kind of car from Swannanoa,NC. These cars are easy fake and this area is notorious for faking classic cars of all kinds . Please be very careful of this bussiness. They will take your money and you won't get much in return.
Also be wary of ANY auction that keeps the bidders screen names PRIVATE.

1997 Pontiac Trans Am: One damned sweet car

I love American muscle cars and the Firebird is one of the best. The Trans Am version is just that much better. This car is fast as hell, both in terms of top speed and accelleration, it handles nice and sharply for its size and it is easy to drive. Add to that the ample leg room in the front and the comfortable seating and you've got the perfect road cruiser.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from Build a Bandit/Pontiac Pros of Fairview,NC. They have been working on my build for over 18 months and they owe THOUSANDS of dollars in refunds to unsatisfied customers.

I have hired a lawyer.

1989 Pontiac Trans Am: 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am Pace Car

05/22/12
• Overall Satisfaction:

• Quality and Craftsmanship:
I have owned my TTA since new, only done 3000 miles, yet would have liked to have driven more as it is exhilaritingly fast, cornering ability is like it drives on train tracks.Totally original with leather,it is the 20th Anniversary Edition, probably the fastest, most enjoyable Trans Am made by Pontiac who sadly does not exist any more.Only replaced the battery and the power antenna(understandable after 20 years),although finding OEM items was difficult.Reliability issues I have not encountered possibly due to little use it has had, everything on it works.I hope to keep it as long as possible.

I would recommend to all Trans Am enthustiasts to try if and when possible to realise its full potential,it was as fast a Porsche Turbo of the same year of manufacture, endurance 24 hour tests of the time averaged 95 mph,top speed being 168 mph.Engine 3.8 Liter by Buick Divison, modified to fit the TTA by Pontiac engineers matched it to a 200-4R transmission.

Reason for buying it was,I missed the chance of buying a 1973 455SD Trans Am and Buick Grand National GNX,when Pontiac offered the 89 TTA it was a best combination by my point of view.

2002 Pontiac Trans Am: Endless Possibilities!

01/25/12
• Overall Satisfaction:
• Performance:
• Reliability:
• Comfort:
• Quality and Craftsmanship:
I have owned V6 and V8 automatic and manual Camaros and Trans-Ams for nearly 5 years now. They provide no shortage of reliability for the sporty feel of the car and parts will be available long after they are discontinued. The Trans Am shares the same motor, drive train, cooling system, accessories and even some interior and body parts with the Camaro, making parts readily available from GM or parts stores. In addition, the motor and transmissions share common pieces with trucks, corvettes and SUVs from 98 to present. Most parts are interchangeable between years, such as intake manifolds, fuel rails, cylinder heads, crank shafts, timing chains and more.

While the Trans Am has an abundant aftermarket and source of parts from GM due to the interchangeability, there are some draw backs. Spark plugs are difficult to change. Oil consumption can be mitigated, but it requires certain upgrades. The catalytic converters fail, but GM periodically updates the recall for the systems. Trans Ams crack at the interior door panel's top but there is a fix online for this. The rear ends are barely capable of handling stock power and can whine or clunk if they are in the process of failing.

All the chronic issues with 98-02 Trans Ams and Camaros are nothing compared to the fun that can be had for very little money. Keeping a Trans Am near stock can provide 200k miles in trouble-free enjoyment. Replacement motors can be found in GMC, Chevy and even Cadillac trucks and SUVs for $500. The ride is smooth if the suspension is maintained. I would definitely recommend buying a 98-02 Trans Am.
