1964 Ford Galaxie: A great collectible car to own or drive

If you are looking for an early 1960s Ford Galaxie, I recommend the 1964 as the best of these years. Ford's quality control was tightened up each year from 1957 until by 1964, the full-size line was mechanically bulletproof. You have a choice of a six cylinder, small block 289 V8, or a number of "FE" series big-block V8s.
Most desireable and rare are the Galaxie 500/XLs, but a similar Galaxie 500 will give you the same basic package at a lower price.
The 1964 Galaxie 500/XL 2 door hardtop was the best-selling XL ever made, and their durability means they are fairly common and certainly less pricey than a comparable '64 Chevy Impala SS. The four door hardtop is also extremely attractive, room, comfortable, and in XL trim, sporty. It can be had at a lower price than the two-door models.
Some changes for 1964 include new sculpted styling, "Sports Roof" fastback styling for all closed models, restyled upholstery. The ignition key was moved from the left, to the right side of the steering wheel. The 260 cubic-inch V8 from 1963 was replaced by the 289, which proved to be a more reliable engine.
Buyers had a choice of three- or four-speed manual transmission, or Fordomatic two speed automatic, or Cruise-O-Matic three speed auto, which was a better tranny.
Having drven a low-mileage original Galaxie 500 4-door hardtop, I was quite impressed by the ride as well as the handling, which was amazingly tight for a such a large car. Good looks, lots of vintage chrome, a reliable design, and good availability of parts, including reproduction, NOS, and used, makes the '64 Galaxie a great collectible car to own. Whether you are planning on owning a concours condition restored car, a clean, low-mileage original, a daily driver, or a project car that you'd like to restore, the '64 full size Ford is a great car!
